Privacy Policy

Effective October 22, 2026

Volty works without an account and without knowing who you are. This policy explains the data involved in finding chargers and sharing reports.

What we don’t collect

  • No accounts, names, email addresses, or phone numbers.
  • No analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs, and no advertising identifiers.
  • No contacts, photos, or other personal data from your device.
  • We do not sell or share personal information.

Your location

If you allow it, Volty uses your device’s location while the app is open, to center the map on you and list the chargers nearest to you. You can say no and still search the map by hand.

To find chargers, the app sends the coordinates of the place you’re looking at to Volty’s servers. They look up stations from Open Charge Map, a public charger registry, and send the results back. Open Charge Map receives the coordinates from our servers, never from your device, so it doesn’t learn your IP address. We use the coordinates only to answer the request and don’t store them.

Searching for places

When you search for a place, such as a town or an address, the app sends what you typed, and roughly where you are (to about a kilometre) so nearby matches come first, to Volty’s servers. They look the place up with Photon, a free place-search service run by Komoot on OpenStreetMap data. Photon receives the search from our servers, never from your device, so it doesn’t learn your IP address. To avoid repeating the same lookups, our servers keep answers to recent searches for up to a day, stored only with the search text and rough location, never with anything that identifies you.

The map

Map images are downloaded straight from OpenFreeMap, which, like any website, sees your IP address and which part of the map is loaded. When you ask for directions, Volty opens your phone’s maps app, and that app’s privacy policy applies.

Reports you post

A report is a status (working, not working, busy or blocked) and an optional comment. Reports are public: anyone using Volty can read them, with the time they were posted. They are anonymous and not linked to you, so please don’t put personal information in a comment.

To stop spam, our servers keep a one-way, salted hash of your IP address together with the times of your recent reports and flags. It can’t be turned back into your IP address, and we use it only to enforce limits, such as one report per station every 10 minutes. When you flag a report, the same hash is stored with that report’s flags so each person counts once.

Reports stay up until they are flagged by several people or removed by us. To have a report removed, write to contact@axwcode.com with the station and the time it was posted.

What stays on your device

  • Chargers you saved, with their details as last seen.
  • Areas you saved for offline use: their map images and the stations in them.
  • The reports you flagged, so they stay hidden for you.
  • A temporary session token that shows our servers this is the genuine app, and on iPhone the identifier of the app’s App Attest key (see below).

Deleting the app removes this data. You can also remove saved chargers and delete saved areas in the app.

Checking that requests come from the real app

To keep the service free, Volty’s servers answer only the genuine app. When the app connects for the first time, and every few days after that, it asks your device’s platform to vouch for it:

  • Android: Google Play Integrity. Google Play services checks this copy of the app and your device, and returns an encrypted verdict, for example whether the app came from Google Play and whether the device passes Google’s integrity checks. Google describes the data it uses in its privacy policy.
  • iPhone: Apple App Attest. The app creates a key in your device’s secure hardware, and Apple certifies that the key belongs to the genuine Volty app. Our servers keep the key’s public half, so they can recognize the app’s later requests.

Our servers check the result, discard the verdict, and give the app a temporary session token that it sends with its requests. These checks don’t identify you, and we use them only to protect the service.

Hosting

Volty’s servers are hosted by Netlify, Inc. Like any web server, the hosting provider may record technical information such as your IP address, device type, and the time of each request, for security and to deliver the service. We do not use this information to identify you or build a profile of you.

Children

Volty is meant for drivers and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update the effective date above. Material changes will be shown in the app.
